Building New Playstyles Around Existing Cards
What’s New: Overtrick now has 7 new special cards (26 total!) and three distinct playstyles to explore: Control, Diamonds, and Honors. Build your run around losing strategically, stacking diamonds, or dominating with honors—each feels like a whole new way to play.
More below!
Overtrick just got a lot more versatile: 7 new special cards have joined the lineup, bringing the total to 26. More importantly, the game now supports at least three distinct playstyles—so instead of always grabbing the “best” cards, you can shape your run around the kind of player you want to be.
Why This Update Matters
In past updates, I focused on making special cards simpler and more rewarding. That meant new players could lean on beginner-friendly cards like Go Big or Go Home, while more advanced players could maximize overtricks to unlock high-value shop cards.
It worked—one playtester even made a tier list of all the cards! But there was still one “optimal” way to play. That’s why this update leans into synergy and strategy, making cards interact in ways that create unique runs every time.
Control: Mastering When to Lose
What if the most powerful move isn’t winning, but choosing when to lose?
- Turn the Tide (existing card) rewards you for losing a trick and snatching control back.
- Loose 2s gives a 3x multiplier if you sacrifice a 2.
- Insurance Policy guarantees you can take back the lead when it counts.
Pair these with play-shaping cards like After You or Anything Goes, and you’ve got a high-skill, high-reward path to stacking overtricks.
Diamonds: Hoard, Stack, Shine
Diamonds have always been a little risky—you need the right hand to make Shine Bright pay off. Now, the new cards make them more reliable (and more lucrative):
- Hidden Gems guarantees 3 diamonds in hand, plus bonuses for off-suit plays.
- Treasure Hoarder rewards every diamond you win.
- Swap was fixed so you can strategically stack diamonds in one hand.
With Diamonds Overload and Marquee Exchange rounding out the set, diamond-focused runs are now fully viable.
Honors: Play Like Royalty
Honors (Ace–10) are already strong, but now they come with ways to dominate:
- High Society ensures you’ll always have a healthy spread of honors.
- Honor Guard piles on rewards for winning 3+ honors in a suit.
- Honor Code forces opponents to cough up their honors when possible.
Together, they turn raw card strength into a reliable trick-bonus engine.
What’s Your Style?
Control, Diamonds, or Honors—each one feels like a different game hiding inside Overtrick. And that’s just the start. The fun now lies in discovering combos, edge-cases, and maybe even a game-breaking synergy (that I’ll definitely nerf later 😉).
So—what will you play first?
