Overtrick v0.6: Making Overtricks Rewarding

“What’s the point of an overtrick?”

That’s the question that kept coming up in playtests.

At first, I assumed the answer was simple: numbers going up are fun. Games like Balatro prove that just watching multipliers stack can be addictive. But after a few experiments with animations and effects, I realized that Overtrick needed more than just bigger numbers; it needed stakes.

Enter: The Shop 🛒

Now, at the end of each level, you enter the Shop. This is where your clever play pays off. You can:

  • Buy new special cards to expand your arsenal.
  • Sell cards you don’t need anymore.
  • Strategize your build between levels, limited only by how much money you've earned.

And here’s where overtricks finally shine. Beating your contract earns you a baseline reward. But every extra trick you squeeze out becomes bonus currency to spend in the shop.

That one daring finesse? That insane multiplier? Now they don’t just feel good in the moment—they fuel your run.

Why This Matters

This change answers the playtester’s question in the best way possible: overtricks aren’t just “extra,” they’re your ticket to bending the rules of Bridge itself. The shop makes every trick feel like an opportunity, and every decision a step toward a stronger deck.

What’s Next

The shop lays the foundation for future expansion—special abilities, new reward systems, and deck-building depth. But the real curveball on the horizon? Bosses.

I’m working on larger, more challenging encounters that break up the standard levels and force you to rethink your strategy. Expect enemies with unique powers, twists on the rules, and games that make your hard-earned build truly count.

Overtricks are no longer just “extra.” They’re the edge you’ll need to survive what’s coming.
